Labgas Zero Air Generators are commonly used in conjunction with a hydrogen generator to run a flame ionization detector (FID). A hydrogen generator provides fuel while a zero air generator provides hydrocarbon free air for combustion in the detector. Labgas Zero Air Generator has a catalytic combustor which is electrically heated to a very precise temperature. At this elevated temperature, all of the hydrocarbon molecules contained in the gas are converted by the catalyst to CO2 and H2O, down to ppb level. Catalytic conversion is the only practical means to remove hydrocarbons, particularly the low molecular ones like methane, which cannot be trapped by any filters or chemical getters.

ZERO AIR AND MICROZAG GENERATORS WORKING PRINCIPLE

Zero Air and MicroZag generators

ZeroGen Zero Air generators remove hydrocarbons from the combustion air used in gas chromatographs. The working principle is explained in the picture below.

The air to be cleaned is directed to a converter, where air leaving the unit will give its heat to the air coming into the unit. Then the incoming air is directed to a heater element that heats the air to desired temperature, over 425 degrees centigrade. The temperature is carefully monitored and adjusted by control electronics. Heated air is then directed to the catalytic part, where hydrocarbons converge to water and carbon dioxide. This method can remove all hydrocarbons, even methane, that is difficult to remove or filter out with any other method.
