水柱型Oken型透氣性/光滑度測試儀KY / KG / KB系列使透氣性（透氣性）和紙，聚合物薄膜和無紡布等各種片狀材料的平滑度易於操作。它是可以在短時間內進行測量的測試儀。
通常用於測量透氣度或平滑度的Gurley透氣度測試儀和Beck的平滑度測試儀可測量一定量的空氣通過板材的時間。另一方面，Oken型測試儀使用少量的空氣流過片材，並基於片材前後的壓力差來計算透氣度和平滑度。由於測量方法的這種差異，Oken型測試儀的特點是可重複性高，並且測量時間比Gurley測試儀或Beck測試儀短。考慮到這些特徵，Oken透氣度測試儀在JIS P8117：2009中被規格化，而Oken平滑度測試儀在JIS P8155：2010中被規格化。

水柱型王研式透気度・平滑度試験機ＫＹ／ＫＧ／ＫＢシリーズは紙、高分子フィルム、不織布など、さまざまなシート材料の透気度（透気抵抗度）および平滑度を簡単な操作で短時間に測定できる試験機です。
透気度あるいは平滑度測定に広く一般に用いられているガーレー透気度試験機およびベック平滑度試験機はシート材料を定量の空気が通過する時間を測定します。これに対し、王研式試験機はシート材料に微小の空気を流し、このときに生じるシート材料前後の圧力差をもとに透気度および平滑度を計算で求めます。この測定方法の違いから、ガーレー試験機やベック試験機と比べ、王研式試験機は繰返し測定精度が高く、また測定時間が大幅に短いという特長があります。このような特長が評価され、ＪＩＳ Ｐ８１１７：２００９に王研式透気度試験機、ＪＩＳ Ｐ８１
５５：２０１０年に王研式平滑度試験機がそれぞれＪＩＳ規格化されました。
